How Much Deer Scent Should You Use on a Mock Scrape?

How Much Deer Scent Should You Use on a Mock Scrape? - Deer Hunter Synthetics

One of the most common questions we hear from hunters is, “How much scent should I apply to my mock scrape, and how often should I refresh it?” Applying the right amount, and knowing how long it will last in different conditions, can make the difference between a productive scrape and one deer ignore.

Here’s our complete guide to scent quantity and longevity.

Recommended Scent Amounts per Application

When applying scent to your mock scrape system, we recommend the following guidelines:

  • Light Application: 1–2 ounces per part, per location

  • Moderate Application: 2–3 ounces per part, per location

  • Heavy Application: 3–4 ounces per part, per location

Tip: “Per part” refers to each element of your scrape setup, typically the branch catalyst for the licking branch and the synthetic deer urine for the ground scrape.

How Long Will the Scent Last?

Scent longevity depends heavily on environmental conditions:

  • Dry, Windy, Hot Weather → Scent dissipates more quickly, often within a few days.

  • Wet, Calm, Cool Weather → Scent can last up to several weeks before needing refresh.

Because conditions vary, always monitor your scrapes with trail cameras and refresh more frequently during periods of high heat, wind, or dry weather.

Why Proper Application Matters

Applying too little scent may fail to attract deer, while applying too much too often can cause overexposure, making the scent profile seem less “new” and exciting. Balancing the right amount with the right refresh schedule keeps deer curious and engaged with your scrape site.

Final Tip: For best results, pair your application schedule with seasonal scent strategies — for example, BCV-2 Mock Scrape Kit for spring/summer and BCM-1 Full Spectrum Mock Scrape Kit for late summer through rut.
