If you’re building mock scrapes this season, choosing the right scent blend can make all the difference. Our two most popular systems, BCM-1 and BCV-2, share a powerful foundation of synthetic deer urine and branch catalyst, but each has a distinct scent profile and seasonal advantage. In this guide, we break down when and why to use each, how their formulas differ, and tips for getting the most out of your scrape setups to draw in bucks consistently from early summer to the peak of the rut.
When it comes to building an effective mock scrape, the scent you use can make all the difference. At Deer Hunter Synthetics, our two most popular mock scrape kits; BCM-1 Full Spectrum Mock Scrape Kit and BCV-2 Mock Scrape Kit, are both designed to mimic natural whitetail scent communication. But while their core active ingredients are nearly identical, there’s one key difference that changes how and when we recommend using them.
The Main Difference Between BCM-1 and BCV-2
Both BCM-1 and BCV-2 are complete two-part systems:
-
8 oz Branch Catalyst – Mimics licking branch scent (glandular communication).
-
8 oz Synthetic Deer Urine – Creates ground scrape scent (territorial/breeding cues).
The active ingredient base is almost the same across both kits. However, BCV-2 features a sweet aromatic all-game attractant overtone that makes it especially appealing in the spring and summer months. This additional note in the scent profile can draw in a variety of deer; bucks, does, and even younger deer, during the period before breeding season begins.
When to Use Each Kit
BCV-2: Spring & Summer
We personally like to utilize BCV-2 in the spring and summer months when deer are more relaxed and feeding patterns dominate their movements. The sweeter scent works as a curiosity attractant, pulling deer into the area without triggering territorial aggression too early.
BCM-1: Late Summer Through Rut
As the calendar approaches late August and early September, we recommend transitioning to BCM-1. This blend is designed to replicate a more mature, territorial scrape scent, perfect for pre-rut and rut phases when bucks are establishing dominance and seeking does.
Every Deer is Different
While our recommendations are based on field experience, it’s important to note that individual deer can have unique preferences. Some bucks may respond more aggressively to BCV-2 even in late season, while others may prefer BCM-1 earlier than expected.
The best approach?
-
Start with the recommended seasonal pattern.
-
Observe deer behavior on your trail cameras.
-
Adjust based on what works best in your area.
Pro Tip for Maximum Effectiveness
-
Refresh your scrape every 5–7 days during active use.
-
Use the branch catalyst on a licking branch above the scrape and apply the synthetic urine to the ground scrape.
-
Keep human scent away & wear gloves and minimize disturbance.
Both BCM-1 and BCV-2 are proven tools in building productive mock scrapes. The difference comes down to timing and the sweet aromatic overtone found in BCV-2. By pairing the right scent profile with the right time of year, you’ll increase your chances of pulling more deer into range and keeping them interested.
